what books have you read recently, hikarin? what is your go-to literary interest? what's your reason for reading it? talk about fiction or nonfiction, academia or entertainment, everything in between, as long as you find it interesting. however, discussion of manga and comics should be kept to the /jp/ board. e-book resources: https://annas-archive.org/ https://libgenesis.net/ https://sci-hub.se/ https://archive.org/ https://openlibrary.org/ https://www.gutenberg.org/

>>332 recently, i have been reading books particularly on religion, philosophy, and political theory. i haven't delved much into these topics, so i don't really have any comments to make, but i'm doing so because i realized i don't really have well thought out opinions on the world and the people in it. so i suppose you could say i'm reading these topics as a means of self exploration and personal/ideological development. currently, i'm reading "The Sayings of the Desert Fathers", a collection of sayings from Christian monks around the 4th to 6th century. i'm a recent Orthodox convert (unbaptized) and it was recommended to me by the Father at my Church. the other book i have been reading is "Fascism, The Total Society" by H.R Morgan, a curated collection of quotes and ideas by different Fascist writers with commentary by Morgan. i'm not exactly a Fascist myself, but i plan on reading all kinds of politically extreme literature from across the political landscape. i suppose i have an interest in the ways one can view the world that would be considered "extreme" by the status quo.

Discuss mechanical keyboards Topre = endgame edition

>>

>>1341 I know there's some SGI boards that use their own protocol or whatever but mine's a 9500829 that just uses PS/2, I don't actually have anything to plug it into, though... My PC motherboard doesn't have a PS/2 port sadly, I convert my vintage keyboards to USB with Pro Micros or get custom PCBs made for them. The Model M is a good board, enjoy it! I assume you meant to say rubber dome (Quiet Touch) instead of membrane because all Model Ms use a membrane for sensing, even the buckling spring ones. I own a few Model Ms myself, but I prefer my Model Fs since the springs are a bit lighter and the bottom-out is firmer. I actually "cushionless modded" one of my Ms and I think it feels much nicer, though I wouldn't recommend it for most people since it took ages and there's a possibility of breaking stuff, also changes the sound a lot which you may not like.

>>

>>1342 oh ok so that's why they fried. personally i use a cheap ps/2 to usb converter for now because i suck ass at soldering btw a couple of years have passed since i researched into it before buying (forgot all the terminologies) but yes i was talking about later variants using rubber dome >though I wouldn't recommend it for most people since it took ages and there's a possibility of breaking stuff, also changes the sound a lot which you may not like. yeah just for the rarity of these things where i live (not US) i'm even scared to just clean it up. by the way, do you know if the springs eventually break and if there's a way to change them (how?)

>>
screw.PNG - 209.04 KB (1019x562) SauceNAO

>>1344 I don't live in the US either, so I know how it is, it took me a while to build up the collection I have. Those who search long and hard enough are rewarded... No, buckling springs don't go bad on their own as long as you don't mess with them, and Yes, there is a way to replace them using a toothpick or something I believe, you don't need to if they all work fine though so don't worry about it. What you *might* have to worry about is that the Model M keyboard assembly is held together using melted plastic rivets that eventually break off over time and cause the keyboard to not feel/sound good anymore or even not function properly. This can be remedied by replacing the rivets that break off with screws and washers as illustrated in pic related. Your Model M might be in good enough condition that it doesn't need it, though. Give it a gentle shake to hear if there are any small plastic parts rattling around inside, that would likely be broken-off rivets.

>>

>>1345 thank you, saved! i'm going to look it up this summer when i have to clean it a little ヽ(・∀・)ノ

>>
screw.PNG - 389.77 KB (435x391)
washer.PNG - 222.76 KB (294x301)
driver.PNG - 673.84 KB (793x552)

>>1346 Here's the hardware you need for it, M2x8 Self-Tapping Screws (Countersunk) and M2.5 or M3 Washers (6mm or 7mm Outer Diameter), you will need 60 of both to fully screw mod a fullsize Model M, but I recommend only replacing rivets that have broken off and leaving those that are still intact alone. Make sure you have a 5.5mm nut driver to actually open your Model M up, as well. Screw mod isn't to be confused with bolt mod, which is an older mod that accomplishes the same thing, but is more intensive and finicky.

I've written a few personal projects over the years, but this time I'll write a nice Linux tool. It will be a CLI program that can handle battery charge thresholds, laptop backlight brightness and CPU min frequency, max frequency, governor and turbo toggles. This will be easy due to the fact that hardware is interpreted as files on Linux, so it's easy to modify these values

>>

>>1077 Proton is a fork of Wine, but it has a few tweaks so it can run seamlessly with Steam. By my experience the best runners are Wine-GE/Proton-GE, if you haven't yet, I would recommend trying it out, although the creator is now working mostly on UMU Launcher, which is by their description on Github: > A unified launcher for Windows games on Linux. It is essentially a copy of the Steam Runtime Tools and Steam Linux Runtime that Valve uses for Proton, with some modifications made so that it can be used outside of Steam. By my understanding it let's you run proton without Steam, so now they don't need to have a Wine-GE and Proton-GE separated, and considering Wine-GE have not been update in more than a year now, and also the Bottles and Lutris creators are heavily involved in UMU, I can assume it's where most of the work is going to right now.

>>

>>1077 I don't believe anyone claimed it didn't

>>

Proton is gay and corporate, and I don't understand how to use it. With wine, it just werks. How do I even install your proton crap?

>>

>>1080 Proton is used on Steam. Corporate? Yes, but FOSS as well with so far no indication of anti-user or anti-freedom practices. Proton has a few neat patches on top of WINE such as fshack, fsync, DXVK and other compatibility patches. You can add games outside Steam as "non-steam games" to make use of Proton easily with them. Otherwise some launchers like Bottles and Lutris have Proton-GE support but you might not like the launchers for their technicalities or even their ideologies (Bottles Flatpak ideology)

>>

>>1313 There is also UMU Launcher now, which by my experience so far is the simplest way to use proton without Steam. https://github.com/Open-Wine-Components/umu-launcher

In this thread we will talk about fitness: running, lifting, dieting, etc. Feel free to share tips, resources, and motivation to get out there and improve your health- both in body and in mind. Starting is easier than you'd think, and has almost countless benefits from sleep quality, longevity, attractiveness, hormone balance, strength, bone density, brain health, mental health, and more. Even just a daily walk outside can go a long way. Resources https://web.archive.org/web/20190122234620/http%3A%2F%2F4chanfit.wikia.com/wiki/Harsh's_Worksheet_(WIP) This is a pretty comprehensive guide featured on 4/fit/ that covers lifting, cardio, and dieting. Gives guidelines on general health, dietary macros, and good exercise habits/routines. I highly recommend reading all of this, you won't need much else. https://tdeecalculator.net/ Website to calculate approximately how many calories you burn per day to base your diet on. Use the sedentary option and adjust from there, even if you aren't sedentary. Other options are more inaccurate. https://www.omnicalculator.com/sports/steps-to-calories Steps to calorie calculator. https://github.com/davidhealey/waistline FOSS macro/calorie counting app that works on a database system. I personally use this. Can even track vitamins and nutrients if you want to be autistic. https://codeberg.org/noahjutz/GymRoutines FOSS app to create/track workout routines. I personally use this as well. It's a bit barebones but it does the job. You don't need to be a musclehead who only eats chicken and rice to become /fit/. If you have any questions, PLEASE ask below! I (and perhaps other hikarins) will do my best to answer to the best of my knowledge.

Are you (Lain) on the Fediverse? (ex: Mastodon)

>>

i was but i stopped hosting my instance a year ago. its just a massive circlejerk of do nothings.

>>

>>1249 No, I only used Lemmy for a bit, but the constant fracturing of instances banning eachother just makes the entire platform unusable. I called SystemD gay once too, and I got a ton of replies just saying "we don't do that here sweetie" and "we don't use that word like that here". Never again.

>>

>>1283 at first, lemmy was appealing to me for being a decentralized rival to reddit, but is it truly decentralized when all the big instances blacklist those instances that don't follow their extreme beliefs? lemmy users criticise reddit and redditors but they double down on everything that made reddit bad from a userbase perspective. doubling down on politics, moderation, censorship, etc i quickly left lemmy after that and never came back, and i dont even try mastodon because i know very well it's exactly the same thing but in twitter format

>>

>>1308 forgot to talk about the circlejerk. both lemmy and reddit have a horrible circlejerk, a good example that isn't politics (because that one is obvious and eternal) is exactly that systemd situation. i find it so unnatural and surreal that all these people collectively defend something that hates us such as systemd or freedesktop

>>

>>1309 corpos like redhat subsist on low iq people which is a common audience on reddit. they just hire a bunch of candy asss that spam arguments like "use whatever works, all software is good, software is just a tool" and since average reddit arch linux sucker doesn't have enough brain cells to parse through even such a trivial deception, they begin parroting the argument creating an avalanche. besides, arch linux was masterminded to have this superiority cult despite arch being a dumb and as-simple-as-possible piece of shit, so the avalanche is also reinforced by the idiots' belief they're somehow superior (in an ironic sense or not, it's the same thing effectively). it's basically unstoppable. the only way to make an OS that is resistant to such crowd manipulation is to openly telling them to btfo and ignoring their very existence. ironically this is what freedesktop does, but they act in bad faith and that makes all the difference.

Modern consumer-grade laptops tend to have durability issues, while business-class laptops tend to be highly durable but refurbished ones are a few generations behind. There's also smaller companies like Tuxedo, Slimbook, System76, etc that seem to make durable laptops as well. At this point, is there any mainstream consumer-grade laptop that is actually durable, or are we now limited to business and Linux laptops?

>>

>>1298 Is it reasonable to expect something good from refurbished 10th gen intel?

>>

>>1300 Hardware lifespan is much higher than typical consumer-grade laptops if we're talking about refurbished business laptops. The laptop overall is sturdier and meant to last. Normally when you buy them second-hand it's safe to assume you might want to replace the SSD and battery, but when they are refurbished they might come with fresh ones. A quick way to suspect it's a business laptop is if the store refurbishing them only provides laptops from dell, hp and lenovo, and they all have intel cpus

>>

>>1301 Most common business laptops currently in refurbished stores include think pad T/X/P series, hp elitebooks and dell latitudes

I used to drink until I vomited and felt fine the next day. now I drink, vomit, drink more, sometimes hack my arms up even though I'm not depressed, embarrass myself in voice calls with people I don't know, break or lose stuff by accident. last time I drank some of that happened, and I woke up more ill than I've ever been in my life, and it lasted a few days. so I'm taking a break for a month or two. even though I'd only drank every few weeks anyway.

I used to be a regular on 4chan/g/ several years ago, but it's gone to shit so much that even I can't take it anymore and I haven't been able to figure out where else to discuss tech/programming online. Do you have any places where you go regularly? The only one that I use other than random subreddits for whichever topic is hackernews, but that place is just no fun at all

>>

>>1007 >and it's being taken over by AI anyway. So hey! This is actually not even slightly true!!!! TLDR; 9/10 times, you have to spend more time debugging the AI code than you would have to spend if you just wrote it yourself

>>

>>1018 >LMs Hallucinate and make random shit up all of the time did you ever try to make it write for embed that is not some mainstream arduino shit. it doesn't hallucinate, it fucking creeps me out. you ask it to help you do shit and it *translates your words into code, LITERALLY*. fucking nightmare.

AI is definitely not anywhere near close to replacing real developers. It's most useful as a tool for digesting documentation that is bad, lacking or hard to navigate

Its a mess of ideas that don't mesh well together. I really hated the shittily contrived 4th-wall breaking sonic.exe-esque creepypasta that took me out of the story as soon as the glitches and shit happened. Haven't read the DDLC+ side stories though, maybe its a lot better than the last.
